Description
Diazepam Accord 10 mg is an oral benzodiazepine tablet designed for short-term symptomatic treatment of severe anxiety and other selected neurologic or muscle spasm–related conditions. Official product information describes diazepam as having anxiolytic, sedative, anticonvulsant, muscle-relaxant, and amnesic properties.
Indications
Diazepam is indicated for the short-term relief of severe, disabling anxiety. Official prescribing information also lists use in acute alcohol withdrawal, muscle spasm, cerebral palsy, and as an adjunct in certain seizure disorders; some product literature also includes oral premedication before dental or surgical procedures.
Dosage & Administration
Route: Oral use.
Administration: Swallow tablets whole with water. Dosing should be individualized by the prescriber, using the lowest effective dose for the shortest appropriate duration. Official leaflets state that treatment for anxiety should generally not continue beyond about 2–4 weeks or 4 weeks in total without reassessment, and discontinuation should be tapered gradually. Adult prescribing information describes divided daily dosing for anxiety, with lower doses in elderly or frail patients and dose reduction in hepatic or renal impairment when appropriate.
Mechanism of Action
Diazepam acts by binding to receptors in the brain and spinal cord, increasing the inhibitory effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). This enhanced inhibitory activity underlies its calming, sedative, anticonvulsant, and muscle-relaxant effects.
Precautions
Use with caution in patients with a history of alcohol or drug misuse, respiratory problems, hepatic impairment, renal impairment, depression, sleep apnoea, myasthenia gravis, or seizure history. Diazepam can cause tolerance, dependence, addiction, withdrawal symptoms, sedation, and impaired ability to drive or operate machinery, and these risks may be increased with alcohol or other centrally acting medicines.
Side Effects
Common adverse effects include drowsiness, reduced alertness, confusion, fatigue, dizziness, muscle weakness, ataxia, and blurred or double vision. More serious reactions may include respiratory depression, unconsciousness, paradoxical psychiatric reactions such as agitation or hallucinations, and dependence with withdrawal symptoms if treatment is stopped abruptly.
Storage
Store below 25°C / do not store above 25°C. Keep the product in the original package to protect it from light; if supplied in a container, keep it tightly closed.
